Industries in Australia That Make Great Use of Forklifts

Written by Industrial Batteries Australia | Jan 31, 2021 9:00:41 PM

Forklifts and material handling equipment are used extensively across a wide range of industries and sectors here in Australia and right across the world. From supermarkets and retail stores to warehouses, factories, dockyards and even construction sites, the humble forklift is an essential item of machinery across a multitude of industries and sectors.

As Australia’s trusted supplier of forklift battery and charging solutions, the Ceil Power team works closely with clients across multiple industries from our headquarters in Wetherill Park, (NSW) and our branches in Dandenong South (VIC), Yeerongpilly (QLD) and Welshpool (WA). Here’s a quick look at some of the industries we work with and the regulatory bodies in each state.

Warehouses

Forklifts are hands-down the most frequently utilised item of material handling equipment in warehouses across the globe. In fact, no other item of equipment comes close. With a wide range of forklifts on the market, including gas and electric forklifts, there’s a variety to suit every type of warehouse application. In some warehouses, forklifts are fitted with attachments so that workers can safely access shelves and pallets at heights.

Dockyards

Dockyards would grind to a halt if it weren’t for the powerful heavy-duty forklifts that move heavy shipping containers. In dockyards and similar logistics environments, forklifts are used to transport containers from ships to storage facilities or directly onto trucks and trains.

As the leading supplier of forklift batteries and chargers in Australia, Ceil Power supports many dockyards across the country with our premium-quality battery and charging solutions for electric forklifts. We also provide trusted forklift battery servicing and repairs.

Factories

Like warehouses and dockyards, Australian factories are heavily reliant on forklifts, with most using these indispensable machines to move stock and load trucks. Forklifts can be fitted with a range of different wheels to suit the flooring of factories, a consideration that’s especially important in food and chemical production facilities with protective flooring.

Construction Sites

The forklifts that are utilised on building sites tend to be heavy, industrial forklifts with pneumatic tyres (to navigate tough terrain) as opposed to the solid tyres that are used extensively in other industries. In construction applications, forklifts are usually employed to move heavy items, like steel girders, pallets of bricks and other construction materials.

Forklift Regulations

The forklift licensing regulations applied across Australia are similar from state to state, with each state administering its own regulations through its Safe Work body. These are:

  • NSW — SafeWork NSW
  • QLD — Worksafe Queensland
  • VIC — WorkSafe Victoria
  • WA — Commerce WA

While the rules and regulations are similar, there are minor differences that employers and workers need to be aware of, especially with regard to licensing. Moreover, while fines for unlicensed forklift usage differ slightly, in all states the penalties are severe — don’t put yourself and co-workers at risk by operating a forklift without a license.
